Environmental Mutagenesis

The concept of mutational signatures was first applied to human cancers as a way of categorising tumours and learning about their history. Human cancers are noisy experimental systems, however, where the final mutational profiles may be made up of many signatures arising from different processes. While the Cancer section of Signal uses mathematical methods to decompose complex mutation profiles into individual signatures from a large collection of tumour genome sequences, here we describe experiments that were designed to examine the mutational signatures associated with exposure to specific environmental mutagens under highly controlled conditions.

In Signal we describe two studies:

  • Kucab, 2019 - A study exposing iPSC cells to 77 different mutagens

  • Zhivagui, 2019 - A study investigating the effect of acrylamide (through it's metabolic product glycidamide) on the genome
